Round the Walls

Another weather-related shortening of the course this year, but at least this year the waterlogged roodee was the only thing missing: the complete loop of the walls went ahead, along with some other sections to make a 5k race. A few of us turned out, with three category wins and other good performances: 450 or so runners.

17. Simon R (1st V40)
48. Steve B (1st V55)
85. Shaun H
111. Pete R (1st V70)
112. Dawn

Update on results and events

Events
We are off for a run in the hills on Saturday 28th December. The plan is to meet at 9.30 at the first car park on Moel Famau, ready to set off for a run at 9.45. The run will be about an hour, fairly gentle, being back and ready to drink tea and eat cakes, minces pies etc. 11.00. Or you can run on your own and join us at 11.00 for tea, or you can just join us for tea. Contact Rob or Jane for more info.

Communication
I have been sending out emails regularly using the list that I have on my computer. I found recently that at least one club member has not been receiving them since I bought a new computer in September. If you are not receiving regular emails and would like to, please email me on robertlmackey@btinternet.com. Or if you are aware of anyone who is not getting email updates please let me know.

Club competitions update.
The top four in each of the competitions at about half way through the season are shown below. Just a reminder as to how it works. You score points for every race completed . 1st place gets highest score, based on approximately twice the number of runners per race e.g. Men's BL is based on 30 points as we get about 15 men running each race.

Better late...Inter Regional C.C. Champs 8th December 2012

The 14th Welsh Inter Regional Cross Country Championships were held as usual at the Royal Welsh Showground on Saturday the 8th December 2012.

Slightly warmer weather than last year greeted the top cross country runners from each region across Wales, although this didn't prevent the water to the shower block  freezing  before reaching it's final destination. None the less, the touch of frost had gone from the ground making the going in some parts 'good to soft' in others really quite 'heavy'.

Though the venue was a constant the course had been changed to send runners in the opposite direction to last year. Changes to the route evidenced runners 'looping' within the wood completely wrong footing spectators, well this one any way, who nearly ran the length of both mens' and women's races secure in the conviction of 'knowing the course' and determined to see runners at some point!

It's a cracking event to watch. In addition to seeing some of the top Welsh cross country runners, it has such a local feel many of the runners being familiar faces and friends, via the fells, training, Cross Country and Borders League series and yet again our own ''little'' club colleagues made disproportionate numerical representation and outstanding contributions. The full results are on the W.A.A. site but in summary

Matthew was 14th and 3rd 'Northern Region' athlete in what can only be described as a very competitive field.

In the women's race, a Buckley trio at one stage seemed to be in formation, a different type of 'thin blue line' streaming past in pursuit and being pursued on some of the toughest parts of the course, those Sundays on the Clwydians obviously paying better dividends than any I.S.A. when tackling the 'up bits'.

Dawn was first home ever so slightly puffing after an epic battle with Sandra Rowlands which saw Dawn pull away in the last few yards.
Margaret and Fenella returned in that order, they to having raced from the off against some very stiff competition. Less than a minute and a half separated the three.

Jez and Eric had sterling runs. Jez was the 2nd North rep and I think 5th in age group. A truly amazing feat by Jez it has to be said. Eric was even to the casual observer clearly under the weather but despite this ran well. Erics condition seemed confirmed when I asked how he went and Eric commented he couldn't really remember the race!! I'd prescribe Lem sip and a hot bath mate.

Really great to watch and a good way to get inspired and motivated on those days when it all seems a bit hard!!
All the best
Chris

CC Round 3 at Wrexham

An good turnout at Wrexham and some fine performances saw the men maintain an excellent season. (Ladies team results not out yet)

The men had two top twenty finishers, Matt in 5th and Jez in 16th helping the men to win top slot in Div 2 with 170 points on the day. They now have a total of 748 behind Bangor Uni who have 521.

Other excellent results for: -
Eric 3rd M45, Les 2nd M60, and John Morris 3rd M65.
The Vets were 2nd on the day with 27 points, but hold onto a clear lead overall with 108 points (Telford are 2nd with 156)

Penmaenmawr Fell Race 2012

On Saturday five Buckley Runners ran the 38th Annual Penmaenmawr Fell Race (usually called “Pen Fell” for brevity), claimed to be the oldest fell race in Wales.

After a wet summer competitors were warned in advance that the course was wet. Heavy rain overnight continuing into the morning could only add to it. Fortunately as we drove west along A55 the sky cleared and we were treated to fabulous weather; cool, sunny with a light breeze. This race comes with dire warnings not to be underestimated; in foul weather there is little margin for error or stupidity up there on open moorland. Fortunately the weather was kind this year.

233 runners had entered the race (you have to enter on-line, no entries on the day) and on the day 193 turned up. One DNF but the other 192 sploshed and splashed and slithered round a roughly triangular route on the high ground behind the quarries at Penmaenmawr for a little short of 11 miles. It includes a steep climb to start followed by steady climbing for another couple of miles, a very wet boggy section, a short road section, rocky and undulating tracks and paths heading north back to a very steep, slippery drop down the notorious “Donkey Path” back to the village hall at Capelulo. Hot soup and a roll are very welcome rewards for the finishers along with a bottle of “Pen Fell Ale” provided by Bragdy Conwy.

It was a good day for the club. Jez Brown had an absolutely magnificent run to take first place overall and in 1st MV40 against some class opposition. At the back of the leading group at the top of the Donkey Track Jez decided to go for it on the slippery descent, not only passing the others but opening out a 24 second gap to finish in 1.17.21. Superb stuff, Well done Jez.

Simon Roberts was 10th overall in 1.22.16 with 4th MV40.
Peter Roberts was 63th overall in1.37.47, winning the MV70 class by 64 minutes!
John Morris was 97th overall in1.44.03 taking 3rd MV60
Last Buckley runner home was Robert Mackey in 167th place with a time of 2.12.07, 13th of 17 MV60's in the race. (that's nearly 15% of the men running)

It was an excellent day, and I thoroughly enjoyed the race. I was surprised to be 8 minutes slower than last year, but in the same position (167th out of 192 this year and 167th out of 190 last year) with the same runners around me! Perhaps the wet and slippery conditions did make a difference, certainly the bog was heavy going and the tracks were very slippery. Nothing to do with being a year older after all.

BL @ Capenhurst

What an excellent day at the races. Big turnout by Buckley Runners on a day when all the clubs turned out well. Good to see new faces, the regulars and many returners.

Well done everybody. Some good pictures around on FaceBook

Abergele 5 Buckley 5

Another grand day at the races for Buckley.
The weather couldn't have been better, nice and crisp, too cold to stand around in but ideal for a spot of 'legging it' along the back lanes of Abergele.
As usual a large field for this well established and popular race with all the 'usual suspect' clubs being well represented. The organisation is pretty well up there and the course, although only five miles, manages to slip in some more than decent gradients.
It was great to see a couple of new Buckleyites if only from a distance and 'an Old Buckleyite' in James Huggins.
So how did we get on, pretty blinkin good really all round, each member giving of their best.
Results of the 'main' race bearing in mind this was a Welsh Championship event as well.

Eric 28.48 and 2nd MV 45 (sure I saw him hanging on the back of an appliance! )
Simon R 28.51 and 2nd MV 40
David Gilbert (Hi David) 30.49
Sean H 31.21
Chris H 34.25  3rd MV 55
Dawn 35. 58    3rd FV 40
Margaret 36.56 2nd FV 50
Fenella 38.05
Lisa Gillins (Watcha Lisa) 40.00
Jack 42.47
Alison 44.47

As if all those performances wern't enough 'Little Buckley' didn't do to bad in the Championships either.
Silver medals wen't to
Margaret, Eric, Simon and Chris in their respective age groups.
We also did well in the Team events, Ladies came 3rd and the Men 2nd.
I've got all the trophies and intend being at the Running Hare on Tuesday so hopefully see you then.
Take Best Care

As a post script can I mention Emily Hooley, unattched runner, been to the club ages ago and I'm trying to lure her back!
Emily in her first year of running was Second Senior Female. Well done mate.

Halloween Hell Raiser, (Night of the Prize Snatchers)

Nant -witch (I know, I know) played host to a coven of  off road Buckleyites last weekend. Braving rain, wind and bacon sandwiches, the 'team' took on the roughest terrain in the South Cheshire Harriers race calender covering as they describe 'a gruelling nine miles cross country' course of mixed terrain.
At the first 'hurdle' several front runners were left unshod and searching for shoes in the depths the Cheshire Mud Flats. Not so the nimble footed Buckley Crew, Jez burning a trail to be followed by the rest, albeit  a little time after.
'Dairy Country' grass fields gave way to tarmac to be followed by recently ploughed ground that disrupted stride rhythm simultaneously setting fire to quad muscles just before popping a hill in the way to make sure the lactic definitely built up nicely.
So how did we do, blinking well I think would be the appropriate terminology, scores on the doors then,

Jez Bram Stoker Brown     59.45 first v40 and second overall
Paul Spooky Stinton           1.04.59  8th
Chris Horror Higgins          1.14.19  32nd
Pete  Resurrection Roberts   1.14.23  33rd first v70
Paul Devil Donoghue          1.15.42  41st
Dawn  Unearthly Urquhart 1.17.19 49th  second lady
John Monster Morris          1.19.21  59th  first v 65
Fenella Haunting Higgins  1.19.45.  61th  third lady

Not a bad day at the races and to put the icing on the cake Buckley were publicly thanked for their continuous unerring support of the race and performances overall.
Worth having a butchers at the photos.

UK fell relay championships

The fell race relay championships is a huge event, attracting the cream of British fell running clubs. We last competed four years ago, when it was hosted by Martin Cortvriend in Llangynhafal. This year, Mercia hosted the event in the Shropshire hills. It's a great day out, and the weather was perfect this year: sunny, cool and clear throughout. Some clubs send three or more teams to the event, but we could just about muster the 6 runners needed until disaster struck the week before the event - when we lost two of our key men to injury. John spread the net wide looking for replacements, eventually resorting to practically kidnapping a 'guest member' at the Collie on Friday night (take a bow, Roger Squires, who was prepared to drive down on his own to Shropshire with 48 hours notice!). Dawn also stepped up to take on the other empty spot, on the long 'pairs' leg with John - involving a massive 900m/3000ft of climbing, with the route finishing over the notorious final section of the Long Mynd Valleys fell race with three killer climbs. Dawn and John put in the performance of the day, a massive effort, although Simon E's superb top 30 finish in the first very steep and fast solo leg ran it close (bear in mind this event attracts the very best runners in the sport). Jeff and Simon R had the third (navigation) leg. This is orienteering-style, with the map kept secret until the start. We took some decent route-finding decisions with a few nifty short cuts and managed to work our way up the field to 45th place, before guest runner Roger finished off with a decent showing in the final solo leg. So despite being weakened by the injuries we had a very enjoyable day out, and finished in the top half of the field, in 76th place, ahead of all our local rivals. It's a great team event, quite exciting, so maybe one to consider for next year?

Welcome newcomers to Buckley Runners

Over the last few months we have been fortunate to welcome a number of new runners, to run with us and even to join as members .

This post is from Rob Davies- tonights Buckley run was my last pre- Chester Marathon run. Tonight with J & S here is the link to my Garmin record , DOWN wood lane and back UP Liverpool road , a little bit of hill there thanks J. !!

If anyone has a spare few minutes on Sunday morning or particularly lunchtime , there's be a few 100, or even a few thousand runners in the Chester Marathon. One of the few marathons in the world which is run in 2 countries. Yes the other is Rome . The route for Chester is here at this link.  It would be great to see anyone along the route , particularly the Aldford Huntingdon SandyLane back into Chester section. But anywhere would be great.
Happy Running folks.
And drop along to the Elfed School Buckley Sports Centre on a Tuesday or Thursday evening for 7pm and you ll usualy find some Buckley Runners going for a run in a few minutes.

Manx Mountain Marathon

A long and hard fell race that starts from Ramsey on the north coast of the Isle of Man and heads to Port Erin in the SW - 50k/32miles with 9000ft of climbing over 16 or so peaks. Rather wet underfoot with a headwind, but still something of a weather window with superb coastal and mountain views throughout. It's a long established and famous fell race, and a classic, logical route along the hilly spine of the Island, so Jez's 6th place is very creditable, with Simon R finishing in 11th place a little later on. The toughest part of the weekend (for a non sailor) was a very rough crossing back in gales on Sunday!

The folly of fashion!

Some thoughts for you as the winter approaches: -
Wearing black seems to be fashionable. Black is great for that slinky little number or the “dress to impress” business suit. But on the road it is not. That is why road workers, breakdown drivers, police and people who work in busy factories and yards all wear yellow HiVis. On the railways they always wear red because its easier to see in daylight.
How often do you see runners and cyclist out in their trendy gear; black tops, black tracksters, black trainers, black bike, black helmet. Very smart but almost invisible to drivers, even daylight. And then to add to the mix, listening to music on headphones so you can’t hear the traffic either.
I witnessed two cyclist nearly knocked off their bikes by a car recently. The driver did not look properly before pulling out of the side road, but with the sun in his eyes the cyclists were not easy to see; dressed head to toe in black with black bikes and helmets. Fortunately no-body was hurt but it could have been very different.
Directgov.com gives the following advice to cyclists, walkers and runners: -
· Wear light-coloured or fluorescent clothing that helps other road users to see you in daylight and poor light
· Wear reflective clothing and/or accessories, like a belt or arm/ankle bands, in the dark
The brighter your clothes, the more chance other road users will have of seeing you. Red is probably best in daylight. Fluorescent yellow colours are best for higher visibility in the dark, preferably with wide reflective strips.
Please think before you go out running on the road. Even in daylight you need to wear colours that can be seen. Now that evenings are getting darker, and even the light in daytime is poor you need to be extra vigilant.

Llyn Brenig Race

Four Buckley Runners turned out on Saturday 15th for this excellent trail race. The 9-mile route round the lake consists a bit of tarmac, some footpaths and forest tracks. It finishes in spectacular style across the dam.

The weather was excellent, dry, sunny at times and breezy, although the breeze felt a bit more like a gale when you ran uphill into it.
Paul Stinton was 11th in 1.01.40
Margaret Ludden was 45th in 1.17.35
Jack Thomas was 57th in 1.24.59
Rob Mackey was 61st in 1.28.01

Off Road Series

Friday night was the last race of the Off-Road MT Series organised by Deestriders. This was the last race that Fred Aird is organizing, he is stepping down after 10 years. Thanks Fred.

A good turnout of Buckley Runners, despite a fairly small field (61 runners). And good results in the series. Paul Stinton picked up 3rd in Senior Men. Jez won MV40, Jeff won MV 45 and Steve won MV55.

Cilcain mountain race

A huge turnout for this race, narrowly beating the previous record (181?), despite slightly unpromising windy/damp conditions. Quite wet underfoot, with a bit of a headwind near the summit (I'm looking for excuses for being a minute slower than last year...). Jez Brown's great form continues.

2. Jez, 35.29
6. Simon E, 36.37
7. Simon R, 36.53
83. John, 46.01
166. Rob M, 57.28

Race the Train

Six Buckley Runners completed Race the Train this year. But over 40 people and 6 dogs turned up on the campsite. So we had a good party, several actually.

Conditions for the race were difficult. The morning was cool and damp with rain showers but it made the tracks and fields very slippery. In the afternoon the rain stopped and the sun started to break through. 30 minutes into the race and the temperature was rising. The light breeze was blowing straight up the valley, so the first 7 miles felt very hot. After turning round it was cooler but the ground conditions following such a wet summer made progress hard. Race times all round seemed slower than last year with only 103 runners beating the train.

The good news is that three of them were Buckley Runners. Times and places were (these are gun times, chip times are slightly different available on RTT website)
Jez was a superb 12th place in 1.34.31
Paul Stinton was 59th in 1.43.35 - another fine performance
Jon Bradshaw was 85th in 1.46.14. That is an excellent time but he did admit it was tough.
Jane had a good run in the conditions finishing 582nd in 2.25.23
with Rob was 679th in 2.37.10

Paul D was 103rd in the 10K in a very creditable 55 minutes.

I have booked the campsite for next year.

Tales from the dark(er) side

As some of you will know I have been aiming for the Lakeland 50 for the last couple of months. Why such a long race ? Well '50 at 50' had a nice ring to it, well at least it did when I entered ! Reality bit when I went up for the recce in April & could hardly walk for the next week. Having said that, I'd survived the 28 miles, and the 7 hours on my feet, so it gave me some confidence that I might be able to do the whole 50.

Once London was out of the way, specific training started in earnest i.e. a few long runs on Friday nights on the Clwydian hills, mostly in horrendously wet weather (but at least I'd be ready for what the Lakes could throw at me !). One of the perceived wisdoms for this length of race is that you 'walk the uphills', which I got really good at - so much so that when I did John's 'The Beast' race it was a real shock that people were actually running uphill, and unsurprisingly I finished well down the field !

As for the race itself, the 50 was actually the little brother of the 100 mile race, which started on the same night as the Olympics started. (One of the 'in jokes' was that it was nice that the country was doing a countdown to the start of the 100). So pre-race nerves were avoided by watching the opening ceremony. Reality bit when we were bussed up to the starting point at Dalemain in the NE Lakes. Start time was noon, which meant that most of us could look forward to finishing in the dark (one of the compulsory items on our kit list was a head torch, so running the Dashes in the Dark was going to come in handy). There were 500 of us nervously waiting to start, and once the claxon went, there was the usual adrenaline-filled rush away from the start, but things settled down pretty quickly.

I won't take you through a blow-by-blow account (if you're really interested I can tell you over a drink !). Essentially what followed was a brilliant experience - mild panic when cramps set in early, but this was overcome by a large dose of electrolytes; fantastic views at numerous points along the way; minor frustration by going the wrong way into Ambleside, but it only added a couple of minutes; great camaraderie - I actually ran the last two legs with someone from Chester, who had relatives in Deeside & Alltami !; running, well walking actually, the last leg in the dark; the final welcome at the finish at Coniston, where everyone who's finished plus all the supporters cheer you in to the area where you get your 'finishers medal'.

I was worried that I wouldn't be able to get out of bed the next day, but obviously the trails must be good for the legs as I didn't feel too bad (although I wasn't too sprightly playing football with my son that evening !).

See you all back up at the club soon
Dave

The Green Green Grass of Home

Wednesday evening saw 90 runners set off on the last of the fell races organised by Martin Cortvriend each summer. They are excellent events, there are no frills, just friendly, challenging, competitive but cheap racing. Martin passes the proceeds on to charity, this year it will be just short of £900! Well done Martin.
The GGG - so called because it is on Martin's doorstep is a superb race. It starts up the track towards Cilcain. Using the shortcuts is allowed. then takes the bike track and then a tough climb to the summit. A steep descent followed by fast running down a green green grassy track, until you get sent off into the heather and another fierce climb before coming down through the heather to rejoin the gravel track to finish down some more green green grass.

Jez Brown in fine form came in second, having been narrowly beaten by the excellent Adam Peers.Other places were: -
Pete Roberts 32nd and 1st V60
John Morris  40th and 1st Vet 60
Mike Jones 50th
Margaret Ludden 77th
Rob Mackey 81st
