Welsh Master CC at Builth Wells

Great to see eight (corrected from previous message) Buckley Runners competing at this event. The highlights of the results (as far as I can see from the most confusing results sheets ever, mainly owing to the need for two sets of results)
Fantastic run from Eric, 8th overall, 1st M50 finisher for North Wales who won the team prize. He was supported by Steve who was 21st overall and 3rd finisher for the team.
Jez was 15th overall and 2nd M40 for N. Wales
Hayley was 19th overall
Alice (running for the first time for weeks) was 47th
Dawn was 50th
Mike was 47th overall and just outside the counters for N Wales
Eddie was injured and was forced to drop out on lap 1.

I am told that if we had registered all our athletes in time we could have won a team prize. Note to self - must get organised for next year!

Fantastic performances all round. Well done all of you

Rob

British Fell Relays

The British Fell Relays were held at Sedburgh on Sunday. The Buckley team were 118th in a time of 5.18.17. That is pretty impressive in a field that includes all the top fell clubs and runners in the UK. The six-strong team was made up of: -
Leg 1   Paul Donoghue 182nd I 1.02.20
Leg 2 Steve Toogood and Simon Robert 79trh in 1.39.02
Leg 3 Andy Pritchard and Huw Lewis 112th in 1.25.47
Leg 4 Andy Worthington 190th in 1.11.08
A fantastic performance! They were 16th in the M40 Category, there were 213 teams (187 finishers).

October is nigh!

September has been a good month for the club! We have had several excellent training nights with strong numbers of runners turning out regularly, all kitted out with the mandatory hi-vis for the dark nights. Training nights have been good fun but some really hard runs too.
Several new members have been running with us at the club. Its always good to see new faces (or should it be legs?)!
Some fine results in races such as two Welsh champions on the fells (Steve and John) and winning the team prize at Sutton.
October brings the busy season.
Next pub night is Tuesday 7th October, 8.30 in Running Hare, Ewloe after training
Next Saturday 4th October is the first race of the cross country season at Bangor. Ladies + MV70 race is at 2.00 with Senior Men and Vets (up to MV60) at 2.45. Parking is usually very tight so we will lift-share, meet in the car park at Northop at 12.15 ready to leave by 12.20
2nd race is two weeks later (18th) at Llandudno, Meet at Northop car park by 12.25 ready to leave at 12.30
Sunday 5th Chester Marathon. Several Buckley Runners taking part, Steve Bellis and Rob Davies are pacemakers
Sunday 12th - Flintshire 10km in Mold at 12.00. Good race, tough course, excellent cause.
10km races at Bangor and Farndon on 19th
Snowdonia Marathon on 26th
Sunday 2nd November is Pen Fell race and Abergele 5.
First Borders League race is on Sunday 9th November

Just a reminder that anyone who want to compete in either Cross Country or Borders League must be a paid up member of the club and Welsh Athletics.

Race reports - please send race reports to me, I can load them onto the blog.

Chris Higgins (Ironman!)

You may not have seen Chris at the club much recently. That’s because he has been training for Iron Man Wales. And if you are not quite sure what that means here is a word of explanation. It’s a full marathon, but instead of carb loading and a good night’s sleep before jogging to the start competitors undertake a 2.5 mile sea-swim and 112 mile cycle ride.
Chris completed IMW at Tenby last weekend in 15 hours 25 minutes and 32 seconds; 1.49.58 swimming, 7.53.38 on the bike and the marathon in 5.11.32. That is just amazing. Chris posted the following report on Facebook earlier today, and that too is an achievement. With his permission I have copied it verbatim.

The Oldest Ironing Man in the Village.
Thanks ever so much for all your good wishes and congratulations. It was a long but fantastic day out that actually went pretty quickly.
The swim was tough to be honest with 50 odd people being taken out of the water by the R.N.L.I. A few being hospitalised. Of course, Sally Napthen, who drove down to add additional brilliant support had done what all good coaches would and anticipated this. I tried to claw my way aboard an R.N.L.I. inflatable only to be pushed back into the water the crew man saying 'Sally said you'd be fine' and so I was!!
What a spectacle the beach was at sunrise with over 2000 swimmers in black wet suits standing to the Welsh National anthem, quite emotional. After the dip, 1k run to the bikes and a tour of the area which as some have said is truly beautiful all 112 blinking miles of it! Thought there were hills up here in the north but we don't have a monopoly believe me. It was a bit like skiing you have to do the boring bit to the top and then the fun starts, brilliant whacking into and through Tenby with the streets lined with people shouting and blowing horns and those soddin’ cow bell things (how ungrateful am I?)
So bike back on the rack running kit on break out the Buckley vest!! The run, like the bike and in fact the swim, was hilly but the encouragement never waned for an instant right up and beyond the witching hour volunteers were still handing out drinks, snacks and (not sure I can actually write the word without tasting them) GELS, there I said it!!
So, swim, bike, run for 15.5 hours, maybe first Buckley vest on the 'red carpet' as they call the run in to the amazing finish to hear announced '' Chris Higgins you are........ hogging the camera let someone else have a go''. Not the quickest time but can do better. Not really decided on the next one though one there will be. Probably nominated the same as Tenby was, a lap top computer, credit card and that critical ingredient a bottle of red wine, a lethal combination but one that can and has paid dividends.
Sorry for the diatribe but it was brilliant, recommended to anyone.
To close I really want to thank everyone for their genuine support and in particular, Buckley and Chester Tri colleagues who have helped no end even when they didn't know it. Lovely Wife and of course Coach Sal who has been unerringly positive even when I wasn't sure I was.

Thanks again.

Races next winter

Please see below date for Borders League and Cross Country for next winter. As far as I know these are finalised. There has been quite a bit of shifting around, mainly venues but some dates in CC too.

Apart from the CC League and the NWCC (which is back at Northop) you will see that both the Welsh CC Champs and the Welsh Masters are in Denbighshire this year. It is important that north Wales clubs take part in these. We complain when they are in south Wales, so we need to show that we value them being in North Wales. Dates in diaries please.

And just reminder - last time the Welsh CC Champs were in Northop, Buckley took the bronze medal behind Cardiff and Swansea!!!! Lets do it again!

Handicap Race

Over twenty runners competed in the handicap race organised on Moel Famau on Tuesday night. Runners set off at intervals, slowest first. The course is 4.4 miles and 650 feet of climbing (and descent) on the forest tracks.

Hazel and Alice had a real battle for the lead. They were neck and neck when they passed me about 25 minutes into the race. It was finally won by Hazel who edged ahead in the last few hundred yards. Several other good runs too.

Huge thanks to Rup for timekeeping and providing something for the midges to feed on. And to John Morris for organising it. Sorting out the start times is a real challenge with so many unknown factors, but it was very successful. I think there was about 4 minutes from first finsiher to last.

Afterwards we went to the Colomendy Arms in Cadole for well-earned drink. It was good to see new faces and runners returning from injury. It was particularly good to see some people less familiar with the trail running out there enjoying themselves.

Buckley Runners Handicap - 8th July

This was a regular event at the club but for various reasons it stopped. As the sports centre is closed on the second Tuesday of July for Buckley Jubilee it was agreed it was an excellent opportunity to resurrect this event.

We will meet at 7.00 in the first car park on Moel Famau. The start of the route is in the forest a few hundred metres from the car park. The route is approx 4.4 miles (7 km) (follow the link below to see the details) on forest trails with 650 feet (200 m) of climbing. The surface is hard gravel. Afterwards we will retire to the Colomendy Arms in Cadole. http://gb.mapometer.com/running/route_3884278.html

There is a start list based on times for races recently. The slowest runners set off first, with the faster runners at intervals afterwards. It will be a good test and good training. And even a bit of fun too.

And don't forget pub night on Tuesday

Deestriders Off Road Grand Prix Race 1

Good turnout and some excellent performances from the club on Thursday at  the race. It was a fine, warm evening, the course was dry (there were no muddy bits to run through!) although plenty of lush grassy growth on parts of the course made it interesting.
There was the usual friendly and supportive atmosphere at this well established race. If you missed it there are three more in the series, you can still qualify for the Grand Prix (3 races out of 4 required). Next race is on Thursday 3rd July.
Eddie Davies 11th in 28:53
Paul Stinton 12th in 29:18
Mike Austin 17th in 30:22

Presentation Night and awards

The presentation night at The Running Hare was very successful and enjoyable.
It was great to see around 25 people there, arriving from 8.00 onwards after training and racing. A chance to chat and eat was followed by the presentation of awards. Rob thanked everyone who had contributed to another very successful year. He reminded everyone that the club awards are there to encourage and reward competing on behalf of the club. He added thanks to the staff at The Running Hare for organising the area for us and to Peter at Dragon Trophies for his help with the awards. The full results are below. It is great to see many new names on the list.
The Members Award was awarded to Mike Austin for his continuous improved performance throughout the year and contribution to the club. It was a difficult decisions with so many other strong nominations, but Mike is a very worthy winner – congratulations, Mike.
Other strong contenders included: -
Les for his unstinting work as coach and support for runners
John for his amazing 70 races in his 70th year (actually it was 73)
Jane for her support for new club members
Jez for all-round performance especially on the hills (just look at the results!)

Presentation night and races in June

Presentation night is on Tuesday (3rd June) in The Running Hare at Ewloe from 8.00 pm onwards. I have collected the trophies from Dragon Trophies. Two extra trophies this year! You will see why if you are there! It would be really useful if I could have some idea of numbers. Can you let me know if you are planning to go. Thanks.

And you need to give some thought to the Members Award!

The response to the requests for payment of club and WA subs has been fantastic; much better than previous years. I am very grateful - it makes the things so much easier for the club officials who have to deal with them. But there are still plenty of members who haven't paid (nearly 20 I think). Please remember, the club officials are volunteers, they give up their own time to support the club. Late payment of subscriptions makes extra work.

BL AGM is on 2nd July. If you have any thoughts about how the league works that you would like raised at AGM please let you BL Reps know (Eric or Jane)

Races
Deeside Off-Road Series Race 1  Thursday 5th June at 7.30
The Beast on Tuesday 10th June from The Miners at Maeshafn at 7.30 (is that correct John Morris?)
Moel-y-Gamelin Sunday 15th (From The Ponderosa) 10.00 I think

See you Tuesday

Update for May and June 2014

Hope you are all settling down into "Summer running" routines.

The club presentation night is on Tuesday 3rd June in the Running Hare. We shall be there from about 8.00 onwards. The aim is to have eaten and be ready for the presentation about 9.15. The competition results have been calculated, trophies are ordered, and the pub has agreed to set aside a corner for us as they have done in the past. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

On the night we will select the winner of the "Members Award". This is awarded to the person who the members feel has made an important contribution to the club; not necessarily by winning lots of races and trophies, but perhaps by improved performance, supporting other runners, organising social events, recruiting new members or an outstanding achievement in a specific event.
Nomination forms will be circulated on the night but anyone who cannot attend or wants to nominate early can email me explaining in no more than twenty words why that person deserves to win. It is the reason that is most important, it is not a vote, it is the strength of the reason that counts.

Forthcoming events
Ras Pen Cader this Saturday. Anyone going?
Chester Half on Sunday
The Beast on Tuesday 10th June
Moel-y-Gamelin Sunday 15th

Deeside Off-Road Series
The open race of the series is on Thursday 5th June at 7.30.
At present there is no information on Deestriders website but I am assured that it is going ahead. If I can get an electronic copy of the entry form I will email it out. This is an excellent series of races, a challenging course and organised by a local club. Definitely worthwhile.

Last BL Race at Shotton

Once again we had a brilliant turn-out and some fine performances at Shotton on Wednesday; 17 men and 4 ladies. Obviously very disappointing that the race result had to be void. We will never know what would have happened. For info there is a set of results being prepared, based on the process of awarding 1 point to everyone who ran and penalty points to anyone who didn't (150 for ladies, 500 for men). That means the race will count as a race for those people who are counting up their BL races. But please see note at the bottom.

But we got some brilliant results:
Hayley picked up 4th SL - but if there was an  improvers medal for ladies she would win it!
Jez and Simon picked up 2nd and 4th in MV40 (tough group that one with Lee Jones in it)
Dawn was 2nd in LV45
Dave Gilbert won the MV45 category, with Eddie in 3rd place, great to see newer members of the club getting the rewards for hard work
Lisa got 2nd in LV45 and
Jane got 3rd LV45 - good to see her back in the medals after a season of great effort
Ian  was 3rd MV45
Les was 2nd MV60
John was 2nd MV65 and
Jack won the MV70 category
and the Vets were second€ overall.

I am trying to collate the results for the Buckley Runners competition within the Borders League. I have a copy of our results sheet from Race 7. They show the order that we finished. They appear to make sense, I think. I know that the majority of runners ran the two loops (instead of 1) running about 5.6 miles (almost exactly the same course as we used last year). A few runners ran three loops - they are easy to spot as those runners are 5-7 minutes and 100 places behind where they should be and I don't think any Buckley Runners were in this group. But a small number of runners ran a part loop before being turned back putting them a minute or two down on where they should be. Did an Buckley Runners do this? If you can let me know I can look at where you should have finished. If not I will collate results on the finish positions I have.

Thanks for your help on this.

Buckley Runners Subs 2014-15

Subs for Buckley Runners and Welsh Athletics are due on April 1st. The amounts are unchanged from last year. We would be grateful if you could pay as soon as possible after April 1st. It is very hard work for Jack and others if we have to spend all year chasing them; last year we were still struggling to get some paid long after the start of the Borders League and Cross Country seasons, that is not fair on people give a lot of their time voluntarily to keep the club running.

Unless your details have changed there is no need to complete any paperwork, all we need is two cheques; £10 payable to Buckley Runners and £15 payable to Welsh Athletics (preferably in an envelop marked "BR Subs 2014-15" addressed to Jack Thomas with your name on the outside.

Many thanks

Rob
